Needing, Enough, Excess & Shortage

A Buddhist practitioner should lead a simple life but this does not mean depriving oneself to destitute living.

Albert Einstein, he of Relativity theory, once said: “Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler.”

All things in life, whether mental or material, must be optimally kept at an enough level:

  • Need means something indispensable.
  • Enough means no residual and no shortage.
  • Excess means something must be removed.
  • Shortage means something must be added.
  • Biggest means there is nothing else besides it
  • Smallest means there is nothing else inside it.
