Cut off, Eliminate, Finish?
There are problems in this world that can be solved immediately once we understand them. As an example, something very big in the middle of the dark night would bring out a fear of some ghostly monster, and something lying winding on the ground would be a snake. By the simple act of turning on a light you can see the large black object is actually the water container you left out this afternoon, and the thing lying on the ground is a rope you forgot to put away. Once you know what it is your fear of it will disappear. On this the Buddha said: "Wisdom makes light the darkness of ignorance." When light arrives, darkness withdraws. When saintly mind appears, ordinary mind dissolves. A problem is solved immediately once it is understood. In Buddhism there is no such way to cut off, to eliminate or to finish suffering. Say whatever you like, but really there is nothing for us to actually cut off, to eliminate or to finish. There is only replacement. Practising Buddhism will not eliminate suffering in the same way you use a hammer to smash a glass to bits, but it will replace it. For example, you are angry when you misunderstand someone. When the truth comes out with a clear explanation, your anger immediately disappears.
